Julian, just unpack for us, what is the value from Beijing's perspective of buying time?
That time will accrue more favorably to Beijing than to Washington?
Okay, so understood.
The the stalemate summit in the way that you described served Beijing's purposes.
But that that then raises a harder question.
What should Washington's posture actually be?
Because there are two serious schools of thought.
I think neither are especially partisan.
One school of thought is that a cold peace is good enough.
The objective would be prevent deterioration, manage the competition within acceptable limits.
The second school of thought would say hard deterrence and maybe escalation dominance, those are the prerequisites for stability.
In other words, warm atmospherics without credible threats actually creates risk and reduces stability.
Where do you come down on how Washington should respond to Beijing's efforts to buy time?
Understood.
So you don't see the different schools of thought as necessarily being in conflict, but if you have a cold peace without building capabilities, you're producing vulnerability.
And I wanna there was a story coming out of Beijing that I think's been underreported.
Which is the framework that Beijing has has used to describe the relationship, which is constructive strategic stability.
And China's foreign minister, Wang Yi, he described it as providing strategic guidance for the next three years and beyond.
And it seems to me that Wang Yi's bottom line is that both sides have to respect each other's core interests without defining what those interests are.
But we know very well that China's core interest, as they see it, includes Taiwan technology policy and trade.
