And he granted me an interview, much to my surprise.
A living person?
Yes, yes.
He was then, he's not now.
He's recently passed, unfortunately.
Yes, he was very much alive then and he invited me to his apartment because I wanted to ask, you know, about... I read a great deal about her and I watched lots of footage and so on and so forth as part of the research.
But speaking to people that actually knew her, you always find out and glean more things than you would ever find out reading about somebody.
And, of course, he imparted lots of marvellous snippets to me.
And then he said, and he knew that I was about to play her, and obviously I'm blonde and I don't look anything like her other than my height.
And I think he found that quite, you know, he could... Disconcerting.
Yes, well, I think he sort of thought, how are you ever going to play this woman, you know, that I knew so well?
And anyway, so he said to me, would I sing?

Well, I hadn't really started to learn the music at that point.
I was just doing preliminary research.
But I said, yes.
He said, I said, shall we sing Je Ne Regrette Rien since he wrote it?
