I think it's actually... This, I suppose, is what went back to me encountering the Egyptian bread in the British Museum.

I think there's something about the sheer wonder of it.

This is so many thousand years old.

and yet it's still here.

A Roman emperor 2,000 years ago wrote this, and we can still access it.

There's all kinds of reasons for being interested in the ancient world.

But for me, it's that kind of mind-blowing, mind-boggling puzzlement, excitement.

People often think how kind of head-splitting it is to think what being on the surface of Mars would be like.

And I find myself thinking, I think that about ancient Greece or ancient Rome.

How could you ever imagine what it was like?

It is very near in all kinds of ways.

We can still touch it and feel it.

We can look at the bread and we can read the stuff.

But it's 2,000 years old.

And we're both so near and so far.

And it makes such a difference to us.

And yet, in some ways, it doesn't matter at all.

And that's part of the familiarity.
