Police say the 30-year-old man did not know the toddler he threw into the pit.

The man allegedly has learning disabilities and was visiting the zoo with his caretaker.

The boy received serious injuries and is now hospitalized in critical but stable condition after being saved by Tracy Johnson, the wife of the zoo's owner.

Johnson leapt into the pit moments after seeing the toddler attacked by the large reptiles.

The Old Hearst Zoo has released a statement offering prayers for the boy as he recovers.

Meanwhile, the police have released the man on bail, saying he was, quote, unfit for interview.

As the investigation continues and questions remain, police have not released the suspect's name or likeness.
