One of the things we can do is we can change the way we screen people in or out of different therapies or interventions.
Today, whether you're eligible for a surgery or a particular treatment can be determined by how old you are.
Right now, we're making that measurement using your driver's license.
We just know when your birthday was, and that tells us whether you...
We can get a lot more sophisticated about making that risk assessment and these biomarkers may be able to help us do it.
I want to be clear.
There's something in geroscience.
There's something in the idea that by intervening on aging biology, we can prevent disease and extend human health span.
And there's something in this emerging science of the measurement of the biology of aging, these biomarkers that are beginning to move out of the research space and into some of these clinics.
The question of which of these frontier geroscience-informed therapies are useful to preserve human healthspan is an entirely separate one.
And so I'm not at all endorsing
any of the therapies that are being delivered in these clinics.
And I'm not telling you they don't work either.
What I'm saying is we now have the technology to evaluate whether these things work.
What we need are clinical trials that test them.
And if I were a patient considering these interventions, I would look toward things that had the most of that evidence before undertaking some new therapeutic strategy.
That said, there are things that can benefit patients that we have not yet been able to evaluate in a clinical trial, and some patients may not wish to wait.
In this space, these clinics are providing the opportunity for people to access those technologies, but it really comes down to a question of, do you trust the provider you're working with?
And there are now efforts that are ongoing to develop certification for longevity medicine clinics that can provide some guardrails.
But this is really a case where prospective patients need to be very careful in vetting who they're working with and thinking about what the real evidence is for what they might be doing.
