He marches the army in full parade, we're told, through the city and everything.

But then he keeps going down the coastline and runs into Miletus.

And Miletus is uncomfortable.

We wrote plays about it and Miletus shuts its doors to Alexander.

Now, a good number of histories from a long time ago to now suggest that the remnants, although it might have been a lot, of the survivors of the Battle of the River Granicus are sort of fleeing, and when they get to these cities, they're locking the doors and stiffening their resistance.

Diodorus has our friend, the Greek movie figure that the audience in Greece can relate to, Memnon,

you know, in the city of Miletus for five seconds before he flees to the next city, next big city down the coast.

But no real proof of that.

But when Alexander gets to Miletus and they shut the doors, I mean, this is a moment of, well, it's a problem for Alexander.

Let's put it that way.

And it's not a problem because he can't handle a siege.

I mean, along with the greatest land army in the world, he's got probably the greatest siege forces in the world at this time.

Although let's not rule out the Chinese who are always fantastic at that.

But that's not going to concern him either.

The problem is, is Miletus, like all these Ionian cities on the coastline, obviously have fantastic harbors.

This is how they make a living from the sea, right?

And the commerce and everything.
