And what's interesting about Nintendo's never really done this before. matched
And the newest console they have, the Switch, has turned out to be this big surprise hit. matched
A lot of people didn't think it would sell well before it went on sale, but now it's racked up, live to date, about 18 million units sold. matched
So that's a good installed base to put a service in. matched
And one thing Nintendo has, it has this library of really loved games that go all the way back to the original... matched
you know, NES console back from when you and I were in, you know, probably high school and middle school. matched
And these games that they're going to actually put on this service that they're going to offer, that now gamers can play those old classic games on this console. matched
And those are things that aren't available anywhere. matched
You know, they've never been on any other type of subscription service or anything. matched
So that's a great advantage for them. matched
And it probably should see at least some decent reception, I think. matched
Yeah, in fact, it's debatable whether it would be used mostly by kids playing the Switch right now or their parents who played some of these games when they were younger. matched
That'll be an interesting test case. matched
I mean, they've been able to sell a lot of units without any kind of service, but it's always been since the Switch came out, investors have been kind of waiting for something like this because, you know, nowadays both PlayStation and Xbox have live services behind them, and they're a very key part of those console ecosystems. matched
So it's not a huge surprise Nintendo's doing this, but I think it'll turn out to be good for them. matched
Yeah, because that's really what's turned games from a retail business where you go in, buy a disc, and play it until the end of the game to something that's a live service that people play online. matched
all year round. matched
And that's why they're, you know, these games like Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Battlefield, these really big games are revenue generators all the way through because people can play online with a lot of people. matched
And then while they're online, you know, they need, you know, subscriptions to things like Xbox Live to play that online. matched
But they also need, you know, they want to buy things in the game that are microtransactions. matched
