When Canada's Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc emerged from the meeting with U.S.
Trade Representative Jameson Greer, his only comment was, quote, LeBlanc's office, however, described the talks as constructive and substantive.
The U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement is up for renegotiation, and harsh U.S.
tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, auto, softwood lumber, and copper will likely be dealt with in the agreement's review.
But Greer has said that any new deal with Canada will include tariffs.
Analysts say that the face-to-face talks are a positive step, since Washington must now say exactly what it wants from new trade negotiations, while Ottawa will likely want to preserve as much of the old free trade agreement as possible, since it's shielded Canada from most of Trump's broader tariffs.

Police expected 200,000 demonstrators, but as the protest got underway, that estimate nearly doubled to become one of Toronto's largest protests in recent months.
It was part of a global day of action called by Reza Pahlavi, Iran's exiled crown prince, as similar rallies took place in major cities around the world.
The largely peaceful protest in Toronto caused major road closures, transit delays and gridlock.
Many protesters draped themselves in the flag Iran used before the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
Protesters could also be heard chanting King Reza Pahlavi.
Organizers say they want to raise awareness of the revolution and get non-Iranians involved and to show people in Iran they stand with them.

After the attack, Carney scrapped his trip to attend a security conference in Munich, deciding to stay home.
Carney was also supposed to announce Ottawa's new defence industrial strategy in Halifax before heading to Munich.
That planned announcement remains postponed.
Several cabinet ministers will join him today at the vigil in the town of Tumbler Ridge.
