You know, in March, Senegal celebrated their trophy to get back to Schrodinger's Cup of Nations in front of all their fans against the Gambia, their neighbors.

And after the match, the coach, Pat Thiao, who we just spoke of, said to the press, you know, if I didn't think that we could win the World Cup, then I wouldn't be sitting here in front of you.

Now, it was a strong statement, but what shocked me more than anything was the fact that this didn't draw ridicule or ire.

If an African coach said this, you know, eight years ago, 12 years ago, I think everybody would have thought he's nuts and everything.

Everybody's conscious that Senegal are not a favorite.

You know, we're talking about England, France, Spain, Argentina.

These are the traditional favorites.

There's probably six nations that are considered traditional favorites.

But it's not ridiculous to think that they're a contender, that they can be a thorn in the side, that they can make a push into the final four.

And it's the first time that I can ever remember us feeling that way about an African team prior to the tournament starting.

So for me, it's an indication of how far the continent's sort of gone.
