And so ended the last major battle fought on English soil against the Norsemen.
In many ways, it's the end of the Viking era in England.
At this point, Harold of England, well he's won a victory to rank him alongside the greatest of English kings.
The battle was won, the dragon has been slain.
And he disbanded his second army that year.
Once again he sends troops home.
That's it, surely, job done for the year, mission accomplished.
And then about a week later, probably the first few days of October,
News arrives of yet another invasion.
This time it is the Normans and it is in the south.
There will be another terrible battle.
Another king will fall.
England's history will be made.
But that is a different story, folks.
