There are certainly norms of propriety, being nice, being polite, saying thanks, introducing yourselves.
But really when it comes to online networking, I think the important part is making sure that the conversation is substantive.
And this is no different from what it's like to network offline.
I think whether you're at a cocktail hour that's set up by a conference or by your employer or whether it's through an interaction that's been mediated
through an online platform, what's really important is that the two parties who are meeting for the first time have a substantive conversation.
And going back to an earlier point, doing your research, preparing for that interaction is vital to that so that you don't spend half of the time that you're meeting together chit-chatting about the weather or the pandemic of all things
So much of what you get from a networking interaction comes from knowing the other party's expertise, knowing what you can help them with, and also finding common bases of connection.
