Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't be sitting here right now if it wasn't for boxing. Boxing is what got me here. So, you know, Lorenzo and I always thought that we would be promoting boxing, and then we started taking jiu-jitsu, and then the whole UFC thing happened. But so much connection to you and your family because... You know, I had heard so many times. It's weird.
I was I wasn't thinking about the podcast today, but I was thinking about your brother today. And basically, there was this rumor out there that your brother wanted to buy the UFC and he thought that it could be big or whatever. And your father didn't believe in it. Your father wouldn't do it. I don't know if that's true, but that's the... There's a little bit of truth in that.
She was just saying that, you know, in Fall River, they put up a billboard of him. Yeah. It's just, it's a fact everywhere all over the world. When somebody comes from a big city, a small town, whatever it is, and they're perceived as somebody that's good at fighting, people give a shit.
Well... I think that your father had this thing where he had to create that. It was like his thing. I mean, I just told this story the other day. I don't remember where we were, but... So I'm on the one-yard line. We're about to get a deal done with NBC. And one of my big deal points was that The Ultimate Fighter had to be on USA.
So we're literally in New York for days hammering it out with all the executives over there. And finally they come back and say, all right, we'll do it. We'll put The Ultimate Fighter on USA. So the next day we come back and, you know, we're about to sign the deal and do all the stuff. And they're like, we can't believe this. We didn't know this. We just found out.
Vince McMahon has the right to determine whether another combat sport can come on to USA. And I'm like. What? How is that even fucking possible? And, yeah, so anyway. And it was in the contract. We'll fly out to Connecticut. We'll meet with Vince, and we'll see if we can get this done. We fly out. We go to the offices. We go in with your father. We sit down.
We lay it out to him, tell him the story. He's like, yeah, I don't want you on the network. We're like, why? I just don't want it. So that blew up the whole NBC deal.
And we were actually going to buy G4. Okay.
So then we pick up the phone. We call Eric Shanks. We fly out to LA and we do the Fox deal.
Yeah.
The rest is history. Yeah. But life is crazy in these ways. You don't know what we would have done or how it would have played out, but we believe that if we bought G4- it would have killed us.
right yeah every time there's new technology out we like to be first and we like to try it and see how it works and you know for instance i mean we uh i can never remember this guy's name but he was a piece of shit he used to run into man pay-per-view and then he went over and fucked up direct tv um and You know, he did dirty stuff to us when we were trying to get on pay-per-view and cable.
Then he's dirty over at DirecTV, too. So Ari and I said, fuck it, let's leave DirecTV and let's go to ESPN+. So we decided to go to ESPN and do ESPN+, and help them launch it. And it was the right move at the right time.
Yeah. Everything is about timing in life. It really is. And some of these things... Work out the way that they work out for a reason.
Listen, you can roll over and take what seems like the easy path at the time. It's much better in the long run to take the harder path. Or what seems like the harder path, I would guess.
It's easy to sit around and cry about, oh, I didn't get this or that.
