I'd done dozens of these solo, and nothing had ever happened that I couldn't explain on the drive home.
I got there a little after nine in the evening.
The light was already gone, and the house just sat there at the end of the drive, black against a slightly less black sky, every window dark.
I sat in the car for a minute the way I always did, getting my narration straight in my head, and then I went in through the side door the family had told me would be unlocked.

I found the kitchen, the pantry, a study with a few books still swollen and ruined on the shelves.
I was, frankly, a little bored.
Good footage, but boring to live through.
I went upstairs around 11.
That's where the cold started, and I noticed it.
But I wrote it off immediately, because two of the windows on the second floor were broken out, and the night air was coming straight through.
