It would have been the end of it, in a normal place, with a normal man and a normal rule about a normal leak.
But I remember that Devin, who had not said a word the whole time, looked up at the loft, and then looked at Voss, and something passed between them that I didn't catch, and have thought about a great deal since.
Devon had a way of reading people.
He told me once that welding had taught him patience, that you spend enough hours watching metal change color, and you learn to watch everything else change too, slow, before it happens.
He looked at Harold Voss for a long second, and then he looked away, and he didn't say anything.
I think now that Devin understood something in that moment that the rest of us didn't.
I think the lake had already picked him out, and I think some animal part of him knew it, the way a deer knows before it sees the truck.
Voss left us the key and drove off in an old Ford that ground its gears going up the grade, and then it was just the three of us in the cabin and the long blue afternoon coming down over the water.
We had a good first evening.
I want to put that down plainly because of everything that came after, because it is easy to look back and pretend the dread was there the whole time.
It wasn't.
We unloaded the truck and stacked the cooler in the kitchen and Cole got the wood stove going and we sat out on the porch with beers and watched the light go off the lake.
The water went from blue to slate to a kind of pewter color, and then the mountains across the lake turned black against the sky, and the first stars came out hard and bright the way they only do where there are no towns.
It was cold for May.
Up at Lake Crescent, it's always a little colder than you think it'll be.
The water sees to that, but the cold felt clean and good, and I felt for the first time in two months like I might actually be all right.
We didn't talk about Aaron much.
Cole brought her up once, careful, the way you'd test a stare you weren't sure of, and I told him I didn't want to spend the weekend on it, and he let it go.
That was the kind of friend he was.
Devin sat at the end of the porch with his boots up on the rail and worked through three beers without saying anything beyond the occasional grunt of agreement, and that was the kind of friend he was.
