I could have said something, made it a thing, told him the rule was the rule, and we were guests in another man's house, and you don't break a man's one rule the first night.
But I was tired and I had three beers in me and the loft did look dry.
And the truth is I was a little relieved to have the pullout to myself.
So I let it go.

Not that the cabin was what it was, because I couldn't have known that.
But that I let my friend climb a ladder into the dark and I said nothing.

I lay on the pullout and listened to Cole's breathing slow into sleep behind the bedroom door, and I listened to Devin settle in up in the loft, and I listened to the great dead silence of the lake coming in through the walls, and at some point, I went under.
The first strange thing happened that night, and I didn't even know it was strange until morning, which is how the cabin worked.
It did nothing dramatic.
It never did anything dramatic.
it moved in small ways in the gaps between sleeping and waking in the places where a tired man doesn't look too closely and by the time you understood what you were seeing it had already been happening for a while i woke up because i was cold the fire had died down to coals and the cabin had that deep pre-dawn chill in it and i came up out of sleep slow and stupid the way you do and i lay there a minute getting my bearings gray light at the windows
