Smooth, grey, rounded lake stones.
The kind off our beach.
Dozens of them.
Packed into the firebox where the fire had been.
So tight you could see somebody had set them in there one at a time.
They were wet.
Water had run down out of the stove and pooled on the hearth.
We had been in that room most of the evening.
nobody had gone to the beach nobody had carried a single stone let alone forty of them into the house and packed them into a burning stove without one of us seeing the three of us stood and looked at the stove full of wet lake stones and nobody said anything for a long time then devin very quietly said we should go
it was the most sensible thing anybody had said all weekend and we didn't listen to it and i will regret that until i die but it was nine o'clock at night on a dark mountain road in a national park with no cell service and the idea of packing up and driving out into that blackness felt somehow more frightening than staying
And so Cole said, let's just keep the doors latched, and the lights on, and leave in the morning, first light.
And I agreed, because I wanted to agree, because morning was only a few hours off, and the lights were on, and there were three of us.
Devin looked at us both.
He had that tight, wrong smile again.
He said, alright.
But I saw something go out of him when he said it, some last bit of fight.
And I think that was the moment the lake won, right there, when his two friends chose to stay one more night and he stopped arguing with us about it.
We pulled the stones out of the stove.
It took both hands in a long time and they were so cold they ached to hold, and we carried them out and dumped them off the porch into the dark.
We got the fire going again.
