We checked every window and threw every latch.
and we did the thing with the loft ladder, which I have to explain, because it became the center of the whole night.
The loft ladder was the old kind, a steep wooden thing on a track, and it folded up and latched against the loft opening with a simple hook-and-eye latch when you weren't using it."
We had pushed it up and latched it shut after Devin's sleepwalking the night before, figuring if it was latched he couldn't get up there and couldn't fall down it.
So we latched it again that night, hook in the eye, and we checked it twice, and we sat back down by the fire.
And about 20 minutes later, with all three of us sitting right there in the room, the latch came undone and the ladder came down.
It didn't slam.
That's the thing I keep coming back to."
If it had slammed, it would almost have been better.
Instead, the hook just lifted out of the eye, slow, by itself, while we watched, and the ladder unfolded and came down on its track, slow and quiet, and settled against the floor with a small wooden knock.
And then there was just the open black square of the loft up there above us, and the ladder reaching up into it, like an invitation.
The fire popped.
The lake was silent outside.
None of us moved.
None of us said a word.
We just looked at that ladder reaching up into the dark.
And after a while Cole got up very carefully, and folded it back up, and latched it.
And we watched the latch the whole rest of the night, and it didn't come undone again.
But it didn't need to.
It had made its point.
