Devin came back to himself on the rocks.
He came back coughing and shaking and human, his own eyes, his own scared face.
And he looked at the lake, and then he looked at me, both of us soaked and bleeding and shaking with the cold.
And he didn't say anything, and neither did I.
There was nothing to say.
We knew.
All three of us knew.
We left him on the rocks with coal, and I went up to the cabin, and I didn't pack a single thing.
I want to be clear about that, because of how this ends.
I didn't pack.
I grabbed the truck keys off the counter and our wallets and nothing else.
Not the cooler.
Not the bedrolls.
Not Devin's boots drying by the stove.
Not one single object out of that cabin.
I left it all.
We put Devin in the back seat wrapped in the one dry jacket we had left in the truck, and Cole drove, and I sat in the passenger seat looking back at the cabin as we pulled out of the gravel, at the green roof and the dark loft window, and I swear to you that the cabin looked the way a face looks when it is about to cry, empty, cheated, alone again.
We left it there alone with its lake, and we drove out, and not one of us looked back after the trees closed in.
We didn't talk about it on the drive.
We didn't talk about it for a long time after.
