Down toward the drainage, maybe 400 yards below the cabin,
The land flattened out into a long straight depression running through the trees, too straight to be natural, grown over with second growth, but unmistakable once you saw it.
An old road grade, a logging road, cut probably a hundred years back, when this whole region had been worked over hard for spruce and pine and hemlock bark for the tanneries.
The Adirondacks are full of these old grades.
You can walk for miles on them if you know how to read them.
I pointed it out to Wesley as a curiosity, the way I'd point out a stone wall in the middle of a forest, evidence of people who were here and aren't anymore.
We followed it a little way, and then we turned back because it was cold and we wanted lunch.
I noted it the way I note things, a man who likes a measurement, and I filed it away, and I had no idea I'd just walked the most important ground on the property.
We made dinner, we built the fire, the evening went the way the night before had gone, easy and warm, two cousins in a dead man's cabin getting comfortable with the idea that it was theirs now.
It was a few minutes before midnight when we heard it.
I was nearly asleep on the fold-out.
Wesley was still up, sitting by the stove with the last of his drink.
And out of the woods, from somewhere down the drainage, down toward the old road grade, came the sound of a bell.
It was not our bell.
I knew that immediately, and I want to be exact about how I knew, because it matters that this wasn't suggestion or nerves.
Our bell was bright and small and close.
This sound was lower, heavier."
It had a flatness to it, a dull bronze weight, the sound a much larger bell makes, and it came from far off and from below, muffled by distance and by all those trees, so that it reached us softened but not soft, if that makes sense.
A big sound heard from a long way away, it rang once, just once, and then the woods were quiet again."
I sat up.
