We had a dozen explanations, and every one of them was reasonable, and I believed all of them, and none of them, and we went to bed, and this time I didn't sleep fine.
I lay awake a long time listening to the hemlocks and waiting, and the bell didn't ring again that night.
But it had answered.
We'd rung, the night before, and the next night something rang back.

In the morning I told Wesley I wanted to go into town, and I told myself it was to get the pump fittings, and that was even partly true, but mostly I wanted to ask somebody about that road grade and that bell, and I didn't say so, because saying so would have meant admitting the night had spooked me, and I wasn't ready to admit that to my younger cousin.
