Old Forge in November is quiet.
The summer people are gone, and the town shrinks back down to the few hundred who actually live there, and the hardware store and the diner and the little historical society building near the lake are about the whole of it.
I got my fittings at the hardware store, and I got to talking with the man behind the counter, an older fellow, lifelong local, the kind who knows every road and every name.
I told him I'd inherited the Lowell place off the forest road, and the way his face changed when I said the name was the first thing all weekend that genuinely scared me, because it changed the way a man's face changes when you've named something he'd rather you hadn't.
He knew exactly which place I meant.
He asked, careful, whether we were planning to keep it.
I said we hadn't decided.
He nodded and rang up my fittings and I thought that was going to be the end of it.
But as I was leaving, he said, not looking at me, looking at the register.
Your uncle keep his rules up?
The ones he wrote out?
I stopped.
I said he had.
I said the cabin was full of them.
Then you keep them too, he said.
All of them.
He wasn't a crazy man, your uncle.
People said he was.
He wasn't.
And that was all he'd give me.
