I felt a little ridiculous saying it, the way I always did.
Talking to a room that I was certain held nothing but dust.
Then I clipped the dictaphone to the top of the chest of drawers, left it running, and went back out to work the rest of the floor.
Here's the first thing that didn't add up, and at the time I barely registered it.
When I came back through that hall maybe 40 minutes later, the door to the child's room was shut.
I'd left it open, I'm sure of that, because I'd propped it with a chunk of fallen plaster so it wouldn't swing closed on the dictaphone.
The plaster was still there on the floor.
The door was just shut anyway, past the plaster, which isn't how a door swinging on a draft is supposed to work.
I told myself I'd misremembered.
I opened it, grabbed the dictaphone, and didn't think about it again until much later.
Around midnight I sat down on the upstairs landing to drink my coffee and review the audio, just to pass the time before I did the third floor.
The landing was wide, and the moon was coming through a tall window there, and it was, weirdly, kind of peaceful.
Most of the recording was exactly what I expected, me breathing, my footsteps fading off, the house ticking and settling.
But there was a stretch right after I'd asked if anyone was there with me where the sound changed.
Not static, not a hum, a voice, low and very close to the microphone, much closer than I'd been when I asked the question, because I'd been across the room clipping the thing to the drawers.
Three words.
I made myself listen to them four times in a row before I'd admit what they were, because my whole job for 11 years had been finding the boring explanation, and I wanted one badly.
You die alone.
I'm not going to pretend I stayed calm.
But my first real thought wasn't ghost.
