It's all still here.
And he tapped the dock with his boot, twice, and looked out at the water and would not say anything more about it.
We drove back to the cabin in the late afternoon, and the sun was going down behind us, and the long shadow of the mountain came across the lake, and Devon was quiet in the back seat the whole way.
When we pulled into the gravel turnaround he didn't get out right away.
He sat there a second, looking up through the windshield at the cabin, at the green roof, at the dark square of the loft window.
Then he got out and went inside without a word.
The small wrong things started in earnest that Saturday evening, and I think it is important that I lay them out the way they actually happened, one at a time, ordinary, because that is how the cabin did it.
If it had thrown a chair across the room we would have been gone inside the hour.
We were grown men.
We didn't believe in haunted houses.
But it didn't throw chairs.
It moved boots an inch.
It rearranged the firewood.
It did things so small and so close to the edge of what you could explain that each one alone was nothing.
And it was only when you laid them all in a row that you saw the shape underneath.
The first one was the boots, Devon's boots.
He had left them by the front door when we came in, the way you do.
And when I went to get more wood from the porch around dusk, they weren't by the door.
They were over by the foot of the loft ladder, set side by side, neat, pointed at the ladder like he was about to climb it, and they were wet.
Soaking wet, dark with water, the laces dripping, when they'd been bone dry by the door an hour before, and it hadn't rained, and Devin had been sitting in the same room as me the whole time.
