What ate at me was how he'd arranged the cabin before it happened, because once I understood what he'd been doing up there, I couldn't see it as the work of a careful man anymore.
I had to see it as the work of a frightened one.
I want to tell this the way it actually went, in order, without skipping ahead to the part you can probably already feel coming.
I've told it twice before, and both times I rushed it, and rushing it makes it sound like a campfire story, and it isn't one.
So I'm going to start with the drive up, because that's where it started for me, and I'm going to take my time.
My name doesn't matter much to the account, but I'll give it so you have something to hang the rest on.
I'm Daniel.
I was 36 that fall, living outside Utica, doing estimating work for a commercial flooring outfit, which is to say I spent my days measuring things and writing down numbers and being right about those numbers.
And I mention that only because being a man who trusts measurements turned out to matter later.
my cousin wesley was three years younger he was lowell's son's boy which made lowell his great-uncle and he'd grown up two streets over from me and we'd hunted that cabin together as kids back when lowell still drove us up himself
When the lawyer called, it was the two of us named in the will.
Lowell had outlived his own son, Wesley's father, by 11 years.
He'd outlived almost everybody.
The cabin and the 40 acres it sat on came to Wesley and me jointly with a note in the file that said, and I'm quoting it because the wording stuck with me,
to the two who used it as boys who will know enough to leave it as they found it at the time i read that as sentiment an old man being soft at the end i read it differently now we drove up together the first saturday of november in wesley's truck
It's about an hour and forty minutes from Utica to Old Forge if the roads are clear, and they were, and then it's another twenty-some minutes off the main road onto a forest road that the county maintains in name only.
And then it's a quarter mile of two-track that Lowell had kept passable with his own gravel and his own back for fifty years.
The cabin sits on a bench of flat ground above a drainage that feeds into the Moose River system.
Deep enough into the trees that you lose cell signal a mile before you arrive and don't get it back.
Mixed hardwood and hemlock, with the hemlock thickening as the ground drops toward the water.
