Lowell hadn't had a dog in years, which made that one read like something he'd written a long time ago and never taken down.
Most of them had the flavor of an old man's superstition, the accumulated paranoia of a person who'd spent too many winters alone in the woods, talking himself into systems.
I want to be honest about how we received them, because it matters.
We laughed.
Not cruelly.
We laughed the way you laugh at a relative's quirks once they're gone.
With affection.
A little sad.
Wesley walked the cabin reading them out loud in a voice meant to sound like Lowell, gruff and clipped.
And I followed him, and we made an inventory of the old man's fears and we found them funny.
And then we came to the bell.
I noticed that and I didn't think anything of it.
Below the bell was the longest piece of tape in the cabin.
Two strips, actually, stacked.
The top one said, never ring this bell.
The bottom one, in smaller letters, crammed in at the end, the way you write when you're running out of tape and running out of room, said, no matter what you hear.
We stood there and read it, and Wesley said the thing that I have thought about every day since, which was, what's he thinks gonna happen?
The soup's ready.
And I laughed, because it was funny, and because I had no reason on God's earth to think it was anything but funny.
