normal life to intrude and your character is expressed in the game and perhaps again football or rugby is so much more condensed and so much more action packed in a way that there isn't time for character to express itself so I think that's why literature is so well, cricket is so well suited to literature because of the tempo I think and the time for character to express itself and that is the case in
recreational cricket, village cricket as much as it is in professional cricket.
There's a lovely book called Not Out First Ball by Roger Morgan Grenfell, which is about his team, the White Rhinos, I think they are.
And the idea is that they play games and you can't be out first ball.
You know, they're that bad.
And his wicketkeeper is called the human sieve.
And so he sort of becomes this wonderful character throughout the book, the human sieve.
Just go straight through him.
And you're just, you know, transported into teams that you have yourself been in.
Exactly.
Yeah, there's Glory Gardens as well, shout out to Glory Gardens, which I just remembered on the way up the stairs, which are sort of teenage fiction about a teenage cricketer.
But I love those, I read them, I'm desperate for them to win every time.
Exactly, yeah, but they're a sort of, remember the Renford Rejectors, they're not very good and there's squabbles and there's fights for jockeying for position and all that stuff, but as a sort of gateway fiction book into cricket, they're a really good series.

He loves The Greatest Test of All by Jack Fingleton, who was a superb writer and player, of course, for Australia before the Second World War.
It's about the tied test at the Gabba during the 60-61 Australia Tour.
Benno versus Worrell, two captains with an incredible attitude towards cricket, legendary players from history, Gary Sobers.
Wes Hall, Bobby Simpson, Neil Harvey and so forth.
This series revived cricket, which was dying a slow, painful death.
