There's one that I'm just going to recommend to people because it was an absolute gem that went under the radar last year.
It's called Father Marriott's Summer Holiday.
It's very simple.
It's a 150-page song, but it's about a man who played one test match for England, took 11 wickets in that test match, never played again.
He fought in the First World War.
He was friends with Edmund Blunden, who we were talking about a moment ago, one of the members of the author's team.
And he obviously had post-traumatic stress disorder, but it wasn't diagnosed in those days.
And he went to teach at Dulwich College, and he would only play cricket in the summer holidays and the half-term.
And he used to play with a man called Titch Freeman in Kent, who took over 3,000 wickets.
And when he and Freeman got together, Kent would win all their games.
They got very, very close to winning the title on a number of occasions.
But Father Marriott, he was called Father Marriott, that was his nickname, he wasn't a man with a cloth.
He was then abandoned, Kent had to go back and teach football.
teach cricket at Dulwich.
I mean, such a bizarre time.
And that book is as much about the damage that the First World War did, but also the amateur professional distinction that you're making.
And just a remarkable cricketer who averaged about 16 in first-class cricket, but no one knows about him.
And what's beautiful about it is when you get good writing...
You kind of know, don't you?
Like, in about two pages, you feel, oh, I am safe with this person's style.
