That doesn't sound like an advantage.
The temptation of the leader is to feel like they have all the answers.
The temptation of the leader is they think that their team expects them to know what to do all the time.
And my age and my lack of experience, they don't expect that of me.
And so I lean into that.
So that's your advantage.
It's like the old chieftain sitting around.
He's the last person to talk.
He wants to get everyone else's perspective before he talks.
And so a good leader is going to draw out the thoughts, opinions, and perspectives of the team.
Because if I say something,
definitively hard, which I do a lot.
I'm opinionated and I say things.
In my head, it sounds like I'm really open-handed, but my team hears it as a challenge and I have to be really careful to not speak first and to draw out the perspective and context that my team has.
So if we're faced with a decision, my job typically is to set the table for the conversation.
I say, hey, what is the key problem we're trying to solve?
What is the context necessary to frame up this decision?
And I invite the room to bring into that.
And what do y'all think are the best solutions?
And then I will start to challenge those and poke holes in those and then say, hey, and then ultimately land on a decision.
