Appearances
definitely a bit of a change.
Listen, I think that's
potentially really significant.
As with all these things, you really want to see what it means in practice.
But first of all, the French have definitely got more serious themselves.
Obviously, they're getting paid large amounts of money by the UK government, but they've got more serious.
And partly what was being talked about this week was about having a surge force of 45...
further officers to deal with the Western beaches, including now, right in Western Normandy.
But I think the Frontex decision could be really significant.
I think it's probably a rather belated acknowledgement by the EU that they can't just be talking about protecting their borders from people coming from Turkey or from Libya.
If you think that's important, then you also have to stop people trying to leave the EU and enter the UK by boat.
So, I mean, I'll be interested to see how that pans out.
The difficulty remains that once you've got people in a very flimsy boat at sea...
and you ask them, as the French do every time, do you want help?
Do you want assistance?
And they say no, then to force them off a flimsy boat at sea is potentially very dangerous.
What then happens, as soon as the migrants have crossed the line into the British rescue area, then the RNLI or the border force ask them, that boat looks dangerous, do you want help?
And they always say, oh, yes, please.
And then they get brought ashore.
This, of course, infuriates the anti-migrant protesters.
