When I was a kid, there was this big touring exhibition of Van Gogh's work, and I was just blown away from that moment on.

pursue things that i'm interested in art history um history of the second world war the history of the holocaust all kinds of things gabriel's you know a lot of stuff flows through the guy um and so i get to um i get to explore things that i want to write about you bring back a character i guess that was a kid that is now an adult and i was just thinking
You know, he was a very special character because he was exactly the age of Gabriel's childhood.
um, I, I actually met the real version of this kid one day when I was just, just the way Gabriel did.
I was a friend of mine had a house on the, um, Helford, uh, passage in, in, in Cornwall and took me out sailing on his catch one day.
There's this little kid waiting for us when we came back to the K and, and, um, and I, you know, don't, don't be around me when I'm working because you're going to end up in the book.
But I always wanted to bring that character back.
And what, you know, what would he be?
What would he grow up to be?
Would he grow up to be a Cornish policeman?
I tell you, I have given serious, serious thought to spinning off that character into his own series.
I love him.
Yeah, his own series.
I don't give any thought to it in terms of his age.
He just is what he is.
I'm writing the books a little differently now, and I don't worry about it.
