What is really fascinating to me is that
the CPD researchers challenge that finding.
What do they challenge about it?
And we're all super stressed about it, but we're not getting compensated for it.
It was always a mistake for me to sign on to a contract where I'm paid by the year at the ABC rather than paid by the word.
Because I think if we were paid by the word, Gareth, we'd be doing a lot better.
We would.
Because that productivity growth has been there, right?
Like we are now producing stories on many more formats.
And so is everyone else in the media.
and in some ways the technology has enabled that to occur.
But think about it also.
The Productivity Commission has an assumption that Australians' average work hours have fallen partly because people are choosing to work less.
So this would be on the theory that, well, their wages have risen and thus they are working less and still making as much.
So the productivity has worked and they are getting more of the benefits out of their labour and thus can work less.
How does the CBD research challenge that finding?
What's fascinating about this Centre for Policy Development Research is that it challenges really well-established narratives about how our economy works and where the benefits are flowing.
Now, there are people who've been saying for a long time, hold on, wages have decoupled from productivity, hold on, profits are going to business owners at a higher rate, at a higher share than they were previously.
But there's been this dominant narrative that, oh, people are choosing less hours, people are
making these choices, one of the things that this research illuminates is that some of what we've been talking about probably hasn't been formatted right.
