Well, David and I both lost parents.
David lost his mother early, at age 54, to leukemia.
I've lost a father.
I've lost a stepfather.
But parental death feels in the natural order of things.
As a child, at some level, you know you're going to outlive your parents.
So when you lose a child, it not only upends
the universe and your universe, but it was a grief with a capital G. I had no idea I could be in such pain, physical and emotional.
We don't often talk about the physicality of grief and how it was like waking up with an ice pick going into my chest every morning.
