After there's a discussion with the patient about the condition and the communication that's required and with the patient consent, the GP can talk
talk to the workplace and the supervisors and try and get an idea of what's going on.
And that will assist the GP in making a management plan for that patient.
Yeah, so this is a really important point and I think people present quite distressed and the GP, you know, when we've interviewed GPs in the past about these issues, they've voiced a lot of concern, found it very difficult knowing what to do, you know, whether to give the patient time off work and how long for and all of this kind of stuff.
And I think it's very important for the GP to make an accurate diagnosis and assess the severity of the condition.
And we've, in our guidelines, suggested some very useful evidence-based tools to help GPs do that.
And then they need to explain the diagnosis, explain the recovery expectations, how long it will take for the condition to improve,
and what treatments are available, and be very patient-focused and recovery-focused in their explanations and working with the patient to get the best outcome.
Well, for various reasons, the employer may or may not be aware of what's going on.
I think there are so many different circumstances that can give rise to a mental health condition.
And I think that's part of the challenge in working in this area.
There are some employers that are very supportive of their employees and want to work to achieve a good outcome.
Some are perhaps not aware of what's going on or are inexperienced.
A lot of it depends on the size of the workplace too.
And I think that throughout this process, there needs to be a lot of good communication happening to try and work things out for the patient.
That's right.
So we know that work is good for health.
It keeps you connected.
It gives you financial compensation.
And it's very important for people's identity, making a contribution, some purpose, meaning, all of those things.
