Oh, and he'll have moved around 200,000 pounds of hash in total before having to give up the largest narcotics forfeiture in American history to that point.
Authorities will call him one of the world's leading hash importers and the biggest drug trafficker ever convicted in New England.
But back to the Fourth of July.
Fishing trawler slips at a point, Judith, Rhode Island.
65 feet, give or take, a working boat in a working port.
And the paperwork says she's fishing swordfish.
But there ain't no swordfish on the boat.
There's an inflatable raft with a motor, a gun, and a crew being paid $30,000 each, close to six figures in today's money, for one night's work.
There's also $50,000 in cash in a package, just in case the Coast Guard start.
The boat goes out about sixty miles off the coast, into the dark, and the crew waits.
And at ten thirty PM, a shape comes up on them out of the Atlantic.
A freighter, three hundred feet or so, Panamaying flag riding low, and she has come by way of two oceans all the way from Karachi, Pakistan.
One of the men on the trawler radios in, and on the freighter's deck, a figure answers.
And then the two vessels sidle up next to each other, and the big ship's crew starts throwing cargo down onto the smaller ship.
And that cargo?
It's 545-pound bricks of hash, straight from Pakistan and Afghanistan's tribal region.
The good stuff, the Khyber Pass's finest.
