Here we are.
The DEA comes in hard on top of coffee's small town cop work, and by the spring of nineteen eighty eight the police operation has gone quiet and technical.
Affidavits, financial records, and a wire.
Then on May 6, 1988, somewhere in Long Island, Stort Newton picks up a telephone and the federal government is listening.
The man of sixteen names is on the phone with Nicholas Kukielsky, and he has heard that the DEA is sniffing around a certain 1983 hash load, and he wants to know who talked.
Across the recorded calls that spring, seven of them with his voice on tape, played to a jury the following winter and printed in the Providence Journal, or some quotes are, the shape of the man finds.

It's a middle manager in a crisis.
He calls himself the brains of the operation, the guy just trying to hold everybody together.
At one point he says, quote, I'm the brains behind par here, you know, but that's all about all I can do.
I'm just trying to, you know, keep everybody going here.
He frets repeatedly that Nicholas isn't lowering up to fight the seizure paperwork on his house, which the police are going after.
He brings up a few times that maybe everybody involved should leave the country until the whole thing blows over.
And then
on the May 6th call and Duden says, quote, You know your wife opened up her mouth.
Nicholas responds, Yeah, no kidding.
Dun says, I don't think there's any problem here, as long as nobody else, everybody, keeps their mouth shut.
Which seems like
kinda nice and like respectful.
You know, I feel like the most massive criminal organization like most massive criminal organizations, that's a death sentence for both Nicholas and his wife.
