In late February 1995, the face-to-face happens.
A Pashto-speaking investigator by himself gets driven by Afridi's nephew up into the tribal areas, into the fortress, the compound from our part one called open and the whole thing before, the walls, the cannons, the chickens, to meet Afridi face-to-face, flanked by his brother and his nephew, on his ground, on his terms.
Afridi tells him that he's grateful for the DA's efforts and committed to letting them get him out of Pakistan.
The most wanted man in the country has agreed to finally surrender.
It's happening.
February 1995, Frankfurt is basically booked.
The Air Force is standing by.
And then his lawyer finds out.
The New York attorney from the stalled Proper Channels track from before gets to his client, and in February 1995, per the record, a freebie after a consultation with him says he's not going to travel.
The trip is off, which, I mean, look, from a defense lawyer's chair, like, it's kind of good advice.
Like, just don't go, bud.
Just don't go.
Do not fly voluntarily into a 120-year federal indictment on the strength of a nice letter.
The lawyer even flies to Pakistan himself in March of 1995 and meets a freebie in person, which, you know, respect.
And then in April of 1995, Begin Kotak's appeals in Pakistan run out, and they are extradited to Brooklyn, which is exactly what the letter warned Afridi was going to happen.
And then in May of 1995, all his properties are ordered confiscated by Pakistan.
Then in October of the same year, the lawyer just loses contact with him because Afridi has made his decision finally, and it's not the lawyer's plan.
And late that October, the phone rings at the DA again.
Afridi, he's reinitiating contact.
