They were genuinely worried about a body double.
Two, putting its promises in writing in an actual letter from the DEA's top man in Pakistan, personally addressed to the most wanted drug fugitive in that country, guaranteeing him a free lawyer if he cannot afford one.
The presumption of innocence, and if the matter resolves in his favor, an immediate flight home guaranteed.
And that man is Ayub Afridi, the Pablo Escobar of Pakistan, the kingpin at the top of the country's biggest drug trafficking syndicate, just as that country has become the world's second most important heroin pipeline.
He is a man who built himself up from a poor illiterate truck driver into a narco boss whose product stretches across the globe, even down to the mansions of Long Island, New York.
In fact, some of the men who operated out of those mansions, moving more than a billion dollars of his product, are the reason he's even on this flight in the first place.
Because when you're staring at 40 years or more of hard time, sometimes you're willing to give up the man at the very, very top of the pyramid, no matter how powerful or untouchable he may be.
Around then, he'll tell the feds he feels that he is quote, innocent of any criminal charges, yet readily admits to trafficking in hashish.
He adamantly denies ever being involved in heroin trafficking, which, fair enough, but some of the heavier charges he's facing are related to hashish and not heroin, so not the best defensive strategy.
Afridi, though, still thinks he's got a play.
He even believes bail is waiting for him in New York.
He's wrong about that for now, but not in the long run.
Because when you build up a network as powerful and as big as he has, and the most monumental geopolitical events in the world come knocking on your front door, well, sometimes that door opens and there's a way out.
