They were all downloading these phone apps with tremor alerts.

But now you can get it directly from source through apps with names like Italy Earthquakes and Did You Feel the Earthquake?
Everyone wants to be able to measure earthquake risk, even though scientists can only ever calculate low probabilities.

Within hours, the entire town centre had been evacuated, with 16 neighbouring municipalities, including Barga, caught up in the frenzy.
Hospitals were emptied, schools were closed and turned into shelters.
Thousands more slept in their cars.
In the end...
