I was a very, very lost kid.

I think a lot of people know that I came from a home of pretty severe domestic violence.

My father who is now passed away, but my father was an extremely violent man and very cruel man.

My mother was an angel, an absolute angel.

And I was the youngest of three kids and just very sensitive.

And uh to lighten it up a bit.

Gay, didn't realise it.

And I think my mother always felt this protective duty about me because she knew one day the world could eat me up.

And she and my auntie Jenny, um, their sisters, introduced me to music.

I remember

listening to the radio, AM radio, so it would have been 70s music, uh especially people like the Carpenters.

But I remember relating to a sense of melancholy through music from a young age because

Now I know my mother used music.

To heal.

So she introduced me to a lot of music on the radio.

We didn't have a lot of money, but my auntie Jenny was younger, so she would buy a lot of

what was then pop records, so people like Fleetwood Mac.

Dina Ross and the Supremes, a lot of Motown records were hand-me-downs.

So even before I went to school, I was playing records, imitating people.

The reason I have a falsetto was because I thought that's how you sang because Dinah Ross had a high voice.
