94, 96, whenever we were pushing really hard for an organization called the Partnership for Peace, which was supposed to be like a non-militarized NATO that was going to include Russia and kind of be an institutional platform for European societies to...
mediate disputes and just learn to get along with each other and learn to live with each other again and uh communicate on on diplomatic levels all those kind of things um it was the big push and you had a lot of officials in the clinton administration who were very much in favor of that but you had another contingent in the clinton administration that was just just irrationally hostile to russia and when you look at who a lot of those people were these are a lot of
recent emigres or children of emigres from eastern and central europe who just hate russians you know and um i think they have a right to own russia or control russia or own and control it right and um in the 96 or 94 election one of the two i can't remember which um the partnership for peace basically just fell apart that year because clinton was worried about the polish he got convinced i don't know if this actually would have been a thing but
got convinced that the Polish vote in Chicago and this Eastern, the Lithuanian vote over here was going to be critical to this swing state.
So he said, well, we have to completely change our entire approach and foreign policy with regard to the former Soviet Union because this tiny, well-organized political minority is, I mean, obviously Cuba is probably the best example of this over a long period of time.
But, you know, that's unfortunate.
That's not the way that- Well, we wound up in a war with Russia as a result.
Have you noticed this?
Absolutely.
And I would say that even as the Spanish Empire declined over the years and it became something of a backwater as the rest of Europe developed industrially, the Spanish were one of the people and to this day remain.
There's several peoples down along on the northern side of the Mediterranean, actually, who are still this way, who are living historically in the sense that we were talking about earlier, where they still know themselves as Spaniards.
And they still have, even if they're atheists and they don't like the Catholic church or something like that, they still have a sense of continuity with their history.
That people who have had conflicts with other people who are living historically, who have had conflicts with them over the years, they remember that and they know that the other side remembers it too.
And so it has been a battleground because there's no reason, once a people stops living that way,
and it just becomes a kind of a atomized Blade Runner society or something, there's no reason to fight with those people anymore.
Who are you fighting with?
You might have to put down a rebellion of some kind if people will just get really antsy or upset, but you don't have to actually have conflicts with those people because what people are you really even talking about?
And Spain has not lost that to a great degree.
