I did not because I've grown up in a very dysfunctional home, a broken family with a father being an alcoholic.

And it was a lot of just dysfunction night after night, you know, him coming home drunk again.

And then for the final time, when I was about 14 years old, he comes home and

pulled out a shotgun drunk and says he's gonna kill the whole family so uh me and my brothers went into action um and it could have been a tragedy uh that night had it not been for my mother getting us out of the house and you know i always tell people brokenness is real people don't know why people end up in the places they end up because we don't really know what happens we may look good on the outside uh but the inside is really uh where it all counts

And from that point, my father was never in our life again.

So there it is growing up, a young man without a father, without a male figure in the house.

And so you have to learn all these lessons of life on your own.

And I said to myself that no one was going to ever control me again like that, the way he controlled us.

Not only with just pulling out the shotguns, but...

you know, the beatings and telling us we would never become anything.

It's very hard for a kid when he's grown up and have to deal with those type of things.

So you end up trying to figure out life on its own as a man, what it is to be a man.

I actually overcome a lot of things, but I had to go through this whole journey, believing in myself to be successful, to play Major League Baseball, having a dream when I was, after my father was out of the house and saying, this is what I wanted to do.
