That fall, the girls started their freshman year at a brand new high school, Leighton High.
The opening of this new school created a division in the East Leighton community.
All of the kids who were older than Jerry, Shelley, and Nancy attended a different school, Davis High.
The split between Leighton and Davis High Schools meant some of the kids from East Leighton didn't mix in the same social circles, even if they lived on the same street.
That was true for Nancy and her first real boyfriend.
She was dating someone, John.
John Sparks lived a couple doors down from Nancy, and he was a couple years older, so their relationship didn't last all that long.
John and Nancy broke up when John deployed to Vietnam in nineteen sixty eight.
He served in the infantry in the Mekong Delta, the site of intense combat.

Nancy and her friend Shelley were by this point in their junior year.
They got their driver's licenses.
Washington Boulevard was the part of Highway 89 that ran through Ogden, about 15 minutes north of where Nancy and Shelly lived in East Leyton.
And Dragging the Vard was a time-honored tradition.
Like many kids their age, Nancy and Shelley were pushing boundaries.
Nancy kept a scrapbook.
In it she wrote about one of these nights, early in her senior year of high school.
