I believe that's happened in the case of Nancy Perry Baird.
In the last episode, you heard the official account of Nancy's disappearance from a gas station on the fourth of July 1975.
You also heard former police officer Tom Jackson's version of the story, which included some significant inconsistencies.
I had no idea how true that was when Tom said it to me.
And it matters because remember we
Tom Jackson was at one point responsible for investigating the Nancy Baird case.
Tom was a reserve officer for the little town of East Leighton, Utah when Nancy disappeared.
He became the town's lone full-time officer just a few months later.
But he didn't last long.
That was body up.
That's a dodge.
East Leighton City Council minutes show the police chief accused Tom of misconduct just a few months into Tom's tenure.
The specifics aren't clear, but it was bad enough the chief wanted to fire Tom.
The counsel instead placed him on probation, and Tom resigned soon after.
Tom spent the next two years struggling to find steady work to support his wife Geraldine and their kids.
