These are Tom Jr.'s words read by a voice actor.
They come from Tom's scrapbook, which ended up in the hands of his kids who shared it with me.
The scrapbook's sort of a mix of a photo album and a journal.
It contains family tree charts, newspaper clippings, some photos, and snippets of self-reflection in Tom's handwriting.
Tom's kids also shared letters he wrote them later in life, like this one.
had been a sensitive kid, quick to cry when bullied, and his dad hadn't shown any sympathy.
This led Tom to resent his father, and

If Tom had had one chance in his life to win his father's approval, it came after he graduated high school in 1965.
After high school, I went into the army for two years.
Again, this was the Vietnam War era, and a lot of American young men entering the armed services went overseas.
Not Tom, though.
He never saw combat.
I don't know why, but I wonder if it might have had something to do with misconduct.
Here's what Tom said about that in one of his letters.
These writings portray Tom as a young man who wore a mask.
His parents were religious people, living in a community where adherence to moral standards mattered.
Tom played that part in public, but in private, he lived a different kind of life.
When he returned to East Leighton following his time in the army, Tom went on the hunt for someone to love.
