Yeah, you get a sense in the poem, and I listened to your translation, of a world that was really different where people felt the gods.
They weren't entities that they occasionally prayed to.
They were out there all the time, and that was a very different kind of world.
Well, we're not here to talk about the movie.
I want to talk about this work that you do, which has gotten so much attention and praise.
You know, you've been reading ancient Greek for a long, long time.
You've been teaching it to students for decades using many of the existing translations of the Odyssey.
I was surprised until I read your book because I didn't know how many times it had been translated.
What made you want to try your own after teaching it for so long?
You know, I think you say in your new book at some point that translation is impossible.
Translation of poetry is really impossible.
I mean, I had this realization many decades ago when I was looking at a poem by the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.
And I knew enough Spanish to read the Spanish and the English.
And it dawned on me.
that you can't really translate poetry the same way you would translate a court deposition or a UN speech because poetry uses language in a very sophisticated way to convey images and emotions and impressions.
And if you use those same words in a different language, it's not going to work.
You have to kind of absorb the impact and reinvent it, right?
