And so it always pains me when I don't have the time or the window to do that because I've always had like a press pass and a reason to do it.

I've never read a biography of a writer.

I'm not interested in any writer's private lives.

And I also really want to preserve the sanctity of the illusion.

And then again...

Biographers of writers, unless they're authorized and the writer's talking to them directly, most writer biographies are horribly mistaken.

They make connections that don't exist.

Their filter.

So one of my favorite writers was another Chicago guy, Saul Bellow.

You guys read Saul Bellow?

Can't get anyone to read Saul Bellow anymore.

But anyway, won the Nobel Prize.

He was the man for a long time, but nobody's reading him right now.

But I do recommend him.

Start with Herzog, which is a fantastic book.
