My name is David Barker I'm the crop consultant for Flavoury Fresh Salads.
We're in Melrose Nursery just north of Southport on the Lancashire plain and we grow
approximately 20 acres of tomatoes over several sites.
The immediate impact is the price of gas has gone up by about 50% more than we expected.
And since gas is one of our major costs of production, it will cost us an awful lot of money.

All the nutrients are provided by us from a central location, from raw ingredients.
And it seems each week when we're checking the prices, it's gone up a bit more.
That's a big worry for us going forward.
100% we could produce more, and the supermarkets would like us to produce more, but the sheer cost of building greenhouses is prohibitive at the moment, especially we're still recovering from the Ukraine crisis.
The price of gas absolutely multiplied there about four or five times.
We've now got this other crisis which isn't as severe, but how long is it going to last for?
Yes, higher prices would obviously be what we'd want.
But people aren't used to paying a lot of money for food, are they?
So there's political ramifications for increasing the price of things like tomatoes.
