And what I hear is this a twenty-four year old man, barely older than my own son, has crashed his motorcycle on a darkened San Francisco street.
He's brought in with spinal fractures and the surgeons repair them.
He's whisked up to the surgery suite.
He's stabilized in the ICU, but the damage to his spinal cord has been done.
He's lost sensation in his legs.
It's unlikely that he's ever gonna walk again.
And at first he's sedated, he's intubated.
He's in the ICU for ten days, but gradually the tubes are removed, he starts to wake up.
At first he's in good spirits, but then probably as the enormity of what's happened sinks in, he starts to become more listless and withdrawn.
And then the day before he says to his nurse, I don't think I want to live like this.
