Yeah, this one just kind of renews itself because there's a kind of unresolvedness to it.
And like all the greatest things, that's because it was an act of creative bravery and chance taking and nobody was in control.
There was no one at the helm.
It might sound like Van is, but this was a sort of musical event where jazz jazzers kind of came in with Van.
He was obviously like a force.
um but what you had was this strange fusion of ideas and the kind of unkemptness it's like it's like tangled undergrowth the music is just going all over the place will the will the bass player ever hit the root note yes that's the big question as you go through tracks one two three four five six seven and eight uh and it's it's yeah i love it van was on a kind of
wordsworthian sort of quest and he brought this kind of celtic mysticism in to a an emotionally hungry sort of devouring kind of he's like a super eye scanning the world and ideas uh it's it's a strange intense record almost hallucinogenic you don't really know where he's taking you and then suddenly he seems to be going back into sort of yatesy and sort of
Irish idyll and then he's somewhere else, he's in a kind of frozen present of sort of cold realities.
It's amazing and I think it is a moment of chance, a chance coming together that no one was in control of, no one can fully take ownership of.
And, yeah, anyway, it wasn't the first album of his that I grew to love.
I came to Van a bit later than I came to a lot of the other sort of heavyweight singer-songwriters at that time.
But when I heard this one, after I'd heard St.
Dominic's Preview and Moondance, which were a bit more obvious in a way, I was sort of...
Befuddled by my first listen from the second listen.
I began to be drink being drawn in and I'm still drawn in now It's still sort of it's still it's I yearn to be able to make something equally sort of wild and carefree that that has such a Strong sense of spirit and yearning that you just that's what you fasten on to the core of the music I heard that when he recorded it I don't know if it's true or not
that he didn't have the band in his cans, he just had himself, because it's chaos, basically.
Is that your ideal?
He's like a lighthouse beam in the middle of this kind of, as I say, this kind of undergrowth, this sort of entangledness of sound that's just making itself around him in that freedom that they had in the late 60s and the 70s to experiment and be free.
But he's got such a sense of purpose, that's what drives the record home.
It's this power, this sort of Wordsworthian drive.
