He also said he'd serve out the rest of his term in Congress.
That former staffer, Regina Santos Aviles, took her own life in September.
House Republican leaders had called on Gonzalez to end his re-election bid over the scandal, and the House Ethics Committee launched an investigation into Gonzalez's conduct.
Earlier this week, Gonzalez made it into the runoff in the Republican primary for the 23rd Congressional District in Texas, trailing Brandon Arreta, a YouTube pro-gun influencer.
Aretha is now the GOP nominee and will face Democrat Katie Padilla-Stout in the November general election.

Gonzalez is being investigated for allegations of sexual misconduct with a staffer in his congressional office.
Gonzalez had been dealing with the scandal after the San Antonio Express News first published allegations that Gonzalez had an affair with his former staffer, Regina Santos Aviles.
Gonzalez denies the affair and calls the scandal a political attack.
Santos Aviles took her own life last September.
Tuesday, in the Texas Republican primary for the 23rd congressional district, Gonzalez came in second with just under 42 percent of the vote, trailing Brendan Arreta, a pro-gun activist.
The two are heading into the May 26 runoff for the sprawling congressional district that includes 800 miles of the Texas border.
